This Dorset chapel was already a house when the current owner bought it in 1988. It is named Pax Holt which the owner translated as House of Peace – appropriate, he said,  for a former chapel.

In the accompanying photo the chapel extended from the rear to the down-pipe and I was told it is of cobb. In the 1940 buildings list it is in the Salisbury, Dews Road, Circuit and it seated 88 people on forms.

I have found no record of the date of building or closure. Today the hamlet consists of a few houses and a farm.

  • I’ve added pictures provided by Lynn Hellewell of the former chapel as it was when her grandparents, George and Violet Waters, bought it in the mid 60’s.

    Thanks Lynn.

  • Interesting Lynn. I’m sure the project would like to see old photos especially if they give a better idea of what it looked like before modernisation. Probably best to get in touch via enquiries@engleseabrook.org.uk

  • My Grandparents bought this property in the 60’s as a weekend retreat before moving in permanently. They lived their for over 29 years before moving into 6d Handley. As a child we had family holidays with Gran and Grandad several times a year.
I have photos of what it looked like when they first bought it if you are interested.
