Brinkworth: Circuit Notice - Brinkworth 1837
From the Primitive Methodist Magazine, 1838
Brinkworth circuit, Dec. 18, 1837.
During the last quarter we have witnessed several conversions, and a few professed to receive the blessing of a clean heart.
Monday, December 11, 1837, we held our Quarter-day; and it was a high day. We commenced business a little after eight o’clock in the morning, and completed it by a quarter after three.
Business being over, a chairman was appointed, and we had about an hour’s conversation on sanctifi cation. We then took tea; after which we returned, and began to sing. The power of the Lord was mighty among us; and in particular, while singing those lines:—
“Shower down salvation from the skies,
Let heaven begin below.”
We entered into a covenant to love one another, to love God more, to attend to our work better, and to try to be more useful. We then joined in prayer; after which we proceeded to Wootton Bassett; and on arriving at the Butts, we commenced singing, and sung through the town to the chapel. And after two short sermons by Bros. Wilkins and Gilbert, I and Bro. Excell administered the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper to near fifty preachers and members.
Before we could go all round, the power of God began to flow; and, O, what a passing by of the Son of God! Seven believers were brought down under the power of God, and most present received a fresh baptism, and one man was converted to God.
About a quarter before ten, we closed this interesting Quarter-day, which is said to have been the shortest and best ever held in brinkworth circuit.
N. B. We have lowered the circuit debt four pounds, twelve shillings, and five-pence.
