Yorkshire covers such a large area that it needs to divided into three counties. The West Riding, covering 1,708,000 acres with a population in 1861 of 1,500,00 was also deemed by the mapmakers to be too large to fit on a single sheet. As they managed to fit counties larger than the West Riding, and counties with larger populations, onto a single sheet, it seems likely the mapmakers were from Yorkshire.

This is a list of chapels that had been registered by 1867, derived from ‘A list of places of meeting for public religious worship, certified to the Registrar General’.   Remember that registration was not compulsory. As registration was valid until cancelled, however, there may be duplication: i.e.  both the old and new chapels in a place may be listed. We have also discovered that the official location may not be the same as the name by which the chapel is commonly described.

Unless otherwise stated each of these places of worship is described as a chapel.

The numbers on the list relate to places, and match those on the maps. The base maps are provided under this licence

The two maps overlap, so you will find some chapels marked on both. The greatest concentration of settlements and chapels is in the centre of the West Riding. Conversely, it has not been possible to discover an exact location for some of the chapels listed by the Registrar General.
