Chapels registered before 1867

Location of Primitive Methodist chapels in Derbyshire 1867
This work incorporates historical material provided by the Great Britain Historical GIS Project and the University of Portsmouth through their web site A Vision of Britain through Time (https://www.VisionofBritain.org.uk)

This is a list of chapels that had been registered by 1867, derived from ‘A list of places of meeting for public religious worship, certified to the Registrar General’.  Remember that registration was not compulsory. As registration was valid until cancelled, however, there may be duplication: i.e.  both the old and new chapels in a place may be listed. We have also discovered that the official location may not be the same as the name by which the chapel is commonly described.

Unless otherwise stated each of these places of worship is described as a chapel.

The numbers on the list relate to places, and match those on the map. As yet, we have been unable to fully identify Scartharnick, but it was near Matlock. The base map is provided under this licence

  • No problem. The Methodist Church was formed in 1932 from three existing groups: the Primitive Methodists (who this site is all about), the Wesleyan Methodists and the United Methodists. If you want to see lists of the Wesleyan Methodist chapels in 1867 go to https://www.mywesleyanmethodists.org.uk/content/category/research-resources/chapels-research-resources/registration There are also pages about individual chapels, arranged by county. For the United Methodists, go to the p[ages about chapels at https://www.myunitedmethodists.org.uk/content/category/chapels-and-churches I can promise you, you will find an awful lot of Devon and Derbyshire chapels in particular!

  • Ok thank you, also explains why Devon is missing so many, thank you

  • Was there a Primitive Methodist chapel in Beeley before 1867? As I explain not all chapels were registered for worship, because it was not compulsory. The sources I have seen suggest that the chapel in Beeley was Wesleyan, built in 1894.

  • Why isn’t Beeley included?
