Quick, Samuel (1852-1912)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J. Redhead

On October 24th Mr. S. Quick passed away in his sixtieth year. In his passing the Pontlotlyn church lost a sincere and faithful friend and the Rhymney Valley Circuit an intelligent and earnest official.

Born in Cornwall in 1852, attending the Bible Christian Sunday School, at the age of about twelve years he gave himself to the Lord. Nearly forty years ago he removed to Pontlotlyn, joined our Church and became one of its most earnest workers. For many years faithfully discharging the duties of class leader, for sixteen years society steward, and for eight years Circuit steward, he put his very best energies into his work, seeking constantly for the welfare of the Church.

He had an intelligent grasp of Christian truth, carefully read the Word of God and sought to translate its teaching into his daily life. He highly appreciated the means of grace, and was regular and punctual in his attendances.

Rev. M. Holmes writes of his “fine Christian character and also his work for the Church. He was a devout follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, generous and true.”

Rev. Miles Johnson says: “To me he was kind, willing to help and always friendly.”

Mr. Hyman writes: “As an official he was candid, sincere, transparent, devoted to the interests of the Circuit.”

Happy in the selection of a life partner, his home life was pleasant, comfortable and Christian ever open to the preachers. His last illness was brief but painful. But amid all he rested in his Saviour. The legacy of a godly life remains with us.
