Mount Pleasant

where the first Camp meeting was held

In 1907, W J Harper wrote, in Mow Cop and its Slopes:

‘The village of Mount Pleasant may be said to be where the Great First Camp Meeting of the Primitive Methodists was held. The Schools known as ‘Woodcock Wells Schools’ are erected almost on, if not quite on the spot where the first waggon was fixed, and where the first batch of revivalists gathered.

It is still a barren rocky waste, as it was a hundred years ago. Looking up to the Tower from this spot the visitor must try to realise that one hundred years ago there were no houses. At the Jubilee Camp Meeting [1857] there were only two houses, both of which are gone. In their place are now quite a number, including a Post Office, an Hotel and many shops, the new Primitive methodist Chapel, and quite a respectably sized village.’
