Torpenhow Primitive Methodist chapel

Torpenhow: Return from the Primitive Methodist chapel in the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious Worship
transcribed by David Tonks

Torpenhow Primitive Methodist chapel opened in 1836.  The 1851 Census day attendance was 40 in the morning and 80 in the evening.  The wonderfully named Steward, John Barwise, made the return.

I cannot see a Primitive Methodist chapel on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map.

  • There is a PM chapel marked on the 1865 maps in Bothel, the next village to the west. I note that John Barwise lived in Bothel, according to the transcription.
