Oakamoor Primitive Methodist chapel
Eaves Lane, Oakamoor ST10 3DG
Oakamoor Primitive Methodist chapel in the Ramsor circuit was opened on 28th August 1859. John Thomas tells us about it in the Primitive Methodist magazine in December 1859. Speakers at the opening celebrations included S Ward (The Wood,Oswestry circuit), R Jukes (West Bromwich), W Meakin (Liverpool), John Thomas and A Bolton.
It surprised no-one when it rained on the opening day, but the occasion was well attended nonetheless.
On 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey maps from 1900 until 1970, a Primitive Methodist chapel (and later Methodist church) is shown on Eaves Lane. In Street View in 2009, it is in use as a house. There is an inscribed date stone on the end wall of the building.
Taking the picture of the chapel today the main thing that struck me how steep a hill the building is on. It would really test the strength of your faith to go to the chapel on a wet miserable winter evening.
I am a little confused by one thing. On the 1881 Ordnance Survey map, the chapel is marked as a Wesleyan Methodist one. What is the story here?
