Morley Brunswick Primitive Methodist preaching room.

Brunswick Primitive Methodist chapel

The Primitive Methodist magazine includes several thousand accounts of the opening of chapels; but unusually the 1869 magazine contains an account of the opening of a preaching room – at Brunswick in the Leeds second circuit.

It was opened for the benefit of those Morley residents who lived in the northern end of Morley – the existing chapel was in the south of the town. Mind you, it was some room – it held 200 and was “beautifully fitted up” – including a harmonium.

The room opened on November 29th 1868 and preachers included Rev Friend Rivers (Morley), Mr Leeds, Mr Parrott (Leeds), Mr Illingworth (Morley), Mr Myers and Mr Cook (Dewsbury) and Revs J Simpson and JF Parish. AMG wrote the account

Where was the room? Was a chapel built in due course? West Yorkshire Archives holds records of Brunswick Methodist chapel, Morley from 1874 until 1919 so it looks like they did. Even better evidence is a picture in the Christian Messenger of 1919 in an account about the Morley circuit.
