Middleton Road Primitive Methodist chapel; photo from 1967

The 1892 Primitive Methodist magazine records the laying of the foundation stones for a new Primitive Methodist chapel on Middleton Road.  Middleton Road was a rapidly growing new suburb of the town.  The new chapel would hold 200.

The 1896 Ordnance Survey map shows a Primitive Methodist chapel at the the junction of Middleton Road with what was then Howbeck Lane and is now Raby Road.  The 1919 map shows a Sunday school has been built next to the chapel. On the 1973-5  map it is labelled Raby Road Methodist church.  The site has been cleared by 2010. Was that this chapel?

  • The Comments are generally correct, as after Howbeck Lane it was called Hart Road, (not to be confused with the Hartlepool Central Estate Hart Road), and after Hartlepool and West Hartlepool were amalgamated in 1967 it became Raby Road. If you would like a Photo of this Chapel, I can supply one for your records if you wish.
