Bournemouth Nortoft Road Primitive Methodist chapel

Martin Reeves recently ‘stumbled on’ this website which has a 1908 photo of a Primitive Methodist Chapel in Nortoft Road and a 2008 picture of the same chapel ‘Developed and Disused’. I drove the length of the road today (19.01.2026) and there is no sign of the chapel though a couple of plots with relatively modern housing on them might give an answer.

The 1908 Ordnance Survey map shows a chapel on the eastern side of Nortoft Road, just north of the junction with St Leonard’s Road.  On the previous 1896 map, Nortoft Road does not exist; Bournemouth was expanding rapidly.

On the 1924 map an additional building has been added to the east of the chapel and together both are labelled “Market Hall”. The footprint is essentially the same on the 1933 and 1947 maps, but the buildings are not labelled.

In 2009, Street View shows a new residential building on the site.
