The Society in this very poor area of South Shields commenced in 1858. Foundation stones for a chapel were laid on Monday 13 October 1873 by Mr JC Stevenson MP and Jacob Jennings (no relation!) one of the oldest PM members in the District. The chapel opened on Friday 3 April 1874 following a march by the Sunday School children from Cornwallis Street (Glebe) chapel, to their new hall situated underneath the chapel itself. The chapel closed for renovation work in 1890, re-opening in the May of that year with a significant debt. TWAS state that the chapel closed in 1894 however, an advertisement for the Harvest Festival on 15 Oct 1899 appears in the “Shields Gazette” . The building was demolished in 1937 under the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) Scheme. Very few records survive for this chapel (at least locally)
