Who has the title to this building, before it falls down?

I’ve recently come across this fantastic old building. Being in construction, historical buildings are my passion. When hunting for the current owners of this property, I have done the normal and searched on the Government Land registry. It looks very much like this building has never been sold, but I’m at a loss as to how to find out A) if this is still the case, B) if its been sub let and to whom And C) if I can buy it, before the structure becomes too unstable to save.

Editor’s note 03/2024

When this page was created it labelled the chapel as a Primitive Methodist chapel.  In fact it belonged to another breed of Methodist – the United Methodist Free Church.  You can read more about it here. This page is retained because of the number of comments it has attracted..

  • Me and my partner found this chapel whilst walking. It would be a shame not to act and salvage as much of the building as possible. I would be intrested in the building if the opportunity arose.

  • It was Harry Harrison who owned this chapel. He lived on main road Whatstandwell (villa rosa); his son Colin lives on main road a little further up the hill than his dads house. Harry used to have the shop at town end Crich and passed it down the family till it ceased trading some years ago. We are related into the Harrison family who still live in Crich.

  • Hello,

Did you make any progress in finding out about the owner?

I live close to it and am also interested in restoring it.

  • We used to live on Middle Lane, Whatstandwell. We could see the old chapel from our cottage. Mother says she always believed Mr Harrison owned it. He used it to store things in it. He lived on Main Road and could access his garden by a door opposite the chapel.
I believe he has now passed away. Mother thought he might have relations living in Crich. (Possibly a son). I hope this helps to track the owner down.

  • Visited this chapel October 2019- not easy to find as it is now covered by bushes and shrubs. It is directly opposite the top end of middle lane as you travel up out of Whatstandwell.
It is amazing it is still standing- and the photo above does not bear much resemblance to its appearance today.
    Am posting two current photos.

  • Follow this link for more information about this chapel.

The Crich Carr Primitive Methodist Chapel on Hindersitch Lane, It was built about 1845 and held about 100 worshippers. A Sabbath School was taught here. In 1884 it was decided to build a larger chapel to cater for the larger congregations. Subsequently a replacement was built on Top Lane.
