South Harting Primitive Methodist chapel
South Harting, Petersfield GU31 5LD
South Harting Primitive Methodist chapel was opened in 1872. By 1947 it had closed and was in use as a house - Shaxson Hall.
Whilst exploring this chapel I came across an estate agent’s sale information for Rock Cottage, in The Square. It said:
“Thought to have been originally owned by the Uppark Estate, as was the whole of South Harting, the house was possibly for the Estate carpenter. In the 1860s a room was added to the house for Primitive Methodists’, a tiny congregation of about 12 people. Numbers grew and what is now Shaxon Hall had to be built to accommodate the growing congregation.”
