Brailsford Primitive Methodist chapel

Main Road, Brailsford, ASHBOURNE, DE6 3DA

The chapel was first built 1843 and  rebuilt in 1923.  It accommodates 120 people.  It is still active in 2014.

James Hurd tells us about the opening in the Primitive Methodist magazine. The society was established 27 years previously and for 19 years met in a rented room before the chapel was built.  It measured 21′ square with 9 elevated pews. It cost £115 of which they had raised £42.

The society produced well known Prims including John Brownson, Chair of the Nottingham circuit, Mr Austin the missionary of Belfast, and Mrs Ride of London

Opening services started on 3 August and preachers included Rev W Tarr (Wesleyan)

  • This chapel was opened in 1845, as detailed on the commemorative stone.
It was also known as Brailsford Central Methodist Church, to distinguish it from the Brailsford (former Wesleyan) Methodist Chapel which was located on the outskirts of the village- which closed in 1967.

  • Brailsford Methodist Church is currently in the Ashbourne Circuit, and the Superintendent minister, Rev Tim Morris, has kindly let us know that the third picture down is actually of the inside of Mill Dale Chapel.
