Paul Watson has located a Primitive Methodist chapel at Chartershaugh, a small mining settlement. Ordnance Survey maps tell us a little of the story.
The 1896 Ordnance Survey map shows a Primitive Methodist chapel close to Chartershaugh colliery, next to the river, with a Wesleyan Methodist chapel a little further away to the south west. By the 1915 map, the Prim chapel has disappeared and a chapel marked as Primitive Methodist with a larger footprint is shown further north, on a road leading to Bonemill Lane in Fatfield. A 1901 account of the Chester le Street circuit here contains a reference to plans being drawn up for a new chapel at Fatfield. Maybe this was it.
You can see a picture here: click on the Fatfield tab and scroll down to see the chapel.
What’s the story?
