Sheffield Hoyle Street Primitive Methodist chapel

For some years services were held in the Lancastrian School, in Gibraltar Street, and a Primitive Methodist society established, which, in 1860, built a good chapel in Hoyle Street.

The 1897 Primitive Methodist magazine tells us that Hoyle Street chapel had been renovated and re-opened, due to a generous £1,000 legacy. There was then “a gracious spiritual awakening.”

In 1901, new schools were constructed at a cost on £1.600

The September 1900 Primitive Methodist magazine notes the laying of foundation stones for the schools at the Primitive Methodist chapel in Hayle Street (sic), Sheffield.

The chapel was located at the southern end of Hoyle Street, where it joined Jericho Street. It disappears from Ordnance Survey maps between 1935 and 1954.  The area has been completely redeveloped since.

  • Nearby on the 1952 OS plan there are ruins. More than likely a bomb fell on it and it was just leveled.
