Newton, William (1816-1856)

Ministry

A transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by John North is attached. He writes as follows. ‘According to the information I have received, “He laboured with acceptability in the various stations, generally leaving them better than he found them.” Having travelled with him, I can bear witness to his pacific disposition, of his zeal for God, and his unwearied exertions to save souls. I always found him one in whom confidence could be placed; he endeavoured to his utmost to carry out the discipline of the Connexion.

As a husband, he was kind; as a father, he was affectionate; as a minister, he was generally well received. His chief delight was to see the work of God revive.’

Family

William was born on 4 July 1816 at Kilnwick, Yorkshire, to parents John and Mary. He was baptised on 14 July 1816 at Kilnwick.

The obituary records that William married in 1841 and at the time of his death there were five children. As William was ‘visiting’ at the time of the 1851 census return I have not been able to identify his wife or children. can anyone point me in the right direction?

William died on 22 May 1856 at Reading, Berkshire.
