James Ickringill (1842-1924) was a Bradford businessman, the founder and head of Ira Ickringill and Co., Ltd, the the biggest firm of worsted spinners in the world, with large mills both at Keighley and Bradford. He was also an active and notable Primitive Methodist. You can read about him here.
Although he was Bradford based, his obituary in the Aldersgate Primitive Methodist magazine refers to a home at Heysham, where “he unfailingly gives his encouragement and support to the feeble cause at Wellington Street, Morecambe.”
But that’s all we know about the society in Wellington Street.
- The society may not have had a chapel building
- As his holiday home was in Heysham, the chapel must have been on the Heysham side of Morecambe
- current maps of Morecambe or Heysham do not have a Wellington Street, although there is a Wellington Terrace off Euston Road
What’s the story?
