Ellis, Susannah (nee Gibson) (1874-1917)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by Thomas Maland

Our Brighouse Church has sustained many grievous losses by death during the last two or three years, and in the translation to the higher service of Mrs. Robert Ellis, at the age of forty-three years, the ranks of its devoted workers have been still further depleted. Heaven is enriched by her presence, and though we are conscious of a great loss, yet the sweet fragrance of her beautiful life abides with us— an inspiration and stimulus to the workers who remain.

With her brother (the Rev. E.W. Gibson) she was associated with our Lane Head Church from her earliest days, and her young heart responded to her Saviour’s love as a flower to the sun. As scholar and teacher, in the choir, and in any sphere of labour where she could serve, she was ever about her Father’s business.

For long years weakness and pain were her portion, but her indomitable will forced the unwilling body to serve the Christ and her beloved Church. Her sufferings, patiently and uncomplainingly borne, terminated sooner than was generally expected. After a brief but severe attack of pneumonia, her Lord called her home early on Whit Sunday morning.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the husband and young son, who miss her more than tongue can tell, but who await with calm confidence a glorious re-union above. Heaven is nearer to them now.
