Flaxman, James Lucas (1816-1893)

Family

James was born at sea aboard H.M. Ship Sultana in 1816, to parents John and Lucy. He was baptised on 7 March 1816 at St John, Portsea, Hampshire.

Census returns identify the following occupations for James.

  • 1841 schoolmaster
  • 1851 schoolmaster & druggist
  • 1861 Wesleyan Reform minister and schoolmaster
  • 1871 schoolmaster, land surveyor & electrician
  • 1881 retired schoolmaster and local preacher
  • 1891 retired schoolmaster

He married Mary Ann Hawkins (1809-1881) on 10 September 1841 at Great Ryburgh, Norfolk. Census returns identify two children.

  • Thomas Robert (1846-1913) – a ranchman (1889); died in USA
  • John Luther Paul (1848-1937) – a printer compositor

James died in the summer of 1893 at Islington, London.
