Memories of Jan Lane about Catshill Primitive Methodist Chapel

By 1945 Vine cottage was divided into two cottages In December of that year my parents moved in upon their marriage. They rented from Mr and Mrs Wilkes who lived in other half. I was born in 1946 and my sister in 1950. My parents lived very happily there until 1971. I remember that at the back of the cottage you could see where the original church windows had been bricked up a permanent reminder of its former history. My mother was for many years caretaker at the new chapel and my sister and i attended Sunday school there.
Chapel anniversary was a very special occasion – new dresses – singing festival etc and the harvest festival was amazing – I will never forget the glorious smells from all the fresh farm produce , giant sheaves of bread (baked at Rutters bakehouse down the road) and perfume from all the flowers when the chapel was opened by my mum in the morning after we had cleaned all the brass the day before.

  • Hi Jan
I moved into Vine Cottage in December last year. I live in the front cottage. Did you live in the front or the back? You would be welcome to visit anytime.
