Laycock, Samuel (1825-1895)

Ministry

A transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J Livesey is attached. he records that Samuel served as a Hired Local Preacher in Halifax, then as an evangelist and finally as town missionary before he entered the ministry at the late age of 38.

Family

Samuel was born on 14 August 1825 at Southowram, Yorkshire, to parents William, a cloth draper, and Mary. He was baptised on 16 October at St John, Halifax, Yorkshire.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Samuel before he entered the ministry.

  • 1841 wool comber
  • 1851 wool comber
  • 1861 town missionary

He married Roseanna Jagger (abt1827-1846) on 11 December 1845 at Halifax.

He married Hannah Sykes (1825-1898) in early 1850 in the Halifax Registration District. Census returns identify two children.

  • Rose (abt1857-1865)
  • Newton (1860-1925) – a teacher  (1891); professor of music (1901)

Samuel died on 12 September 1895 at Gateshead, Co. Durham.
