Family
James was born on 16 February1836 at Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, to parents Thomas, a bricklayer (1851), and Ann. he was baptised on 13 March 1836 at St Mary, Nottingham.
The 1851 census return records James as a bricklayer’s apprentice.
The family emigrated to USA in 1870, settling in Houston where the 1880 census return records James as a brick mason. A memorial to James and his eldest son records that they were influential brick masons and contractors who helped develop the city of Houston. The Houston Cotton Exchange building was one of those built by James.
He married Emily Haywood (1844-1917) on 30 September 1862 at St Thomas, Crookes, Sheffield, Yorkshire, by licence. Census returns identify four children.

- Samuel James Sherwood (abt1868-1894)
- Herbert (abt1868-1897)
- Emily (1870-1957) – married Peterson Billups Goodwyn, a book keeper, circa 1891
James died on 16 June 1888 in Harris County, Houston, Texas, USA.
