The return from the Primitive Methodist preaching place in Pilkington to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious worship records that the building in Sugar Lane was erected before 1800.

On Census Sunday 20 people and 40 scholars attended the meeting and Sunday school. The Return was completed by Robert Hays.
