Dix, Elizabeth (nee Johnson) (1837-1912)

In the departure of Elizabeth Dix our London Street Church, Reading, has lost one of its oldest members. Born in the village of Aldworth, near Reading, early in life she was converted and joined our Church. Removing to Reading, she joined Old Minster Street Society, and for fifty-two years remained a consistent and devoted member. She took an active interest in all the movements of London Street, especially attached in the mothers’ meetings. Her frank and kindly disposition, her deep religious spirit and character, her love and loyalty to our cause made her services invaluable. Her family cherish her memory with the greatest affection and gratitude. She passed peacefully away on May 20th, 1912.

Family

Elizabeth was born in 1837 Aldworth, Berkshire, to parents Joseph Johnson and Harriet Maskell. She was baptised on 5 February 1837 at Aldworth.

She married Frederick Dix (1842-1905), a bootmaker, on 3 June 1865 at Aldworth, Berkshire. Census returns identify four children.

  • Frederick Johnson (1866-1951) – a biscuit sorter (1911)
  • Lizzie Harriet (1873-1960) – a dressmaker
  • Frank (1875-1958) – a baker (1911)
  • Horace Joseph (1878-1900) 

Elizabeth died on 20 May 1912 at Reading, Berkshire.
