Drew, James (1843-1913)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by F. Leadley

The East Knoyle Church, Mere Station, has suffered a great loss in the passing of our dear Brother Drew on February 16th, 1913. Highly respected far beyond the bounds of the parish, he was a School Manager and Trustee of the Parish Charities. For fifty years he had been a local preacher, and was at the time of his death senior society steward. His home has been for many years open to ministers and lay preachers, and his large family are for the most part members of our Church.

The Rev. W. Taylor, a former minister, writes of him thus:— “Ever since I first became acquainted with him and was privileged to enjoy the hospitality of his home I was much impressed with his quiet, unassuming, genuine goodness. He enjoyed the deepest love and honour of every member of his family, and a more loyal member of the Church could not be.” At eighteen years of age he made the great surrender in the Wesleyan chapel at Ampfield, Hants. But for the past forty-three years he has been a loyal member and official of our Church.

The funeral service on February 20th was conducted by Revs. F. Leadley and J. W. Lewis. Amongst the beautiful floral tributes was one from the Hon. G. Wyndham and Countess Grosvenor (Clouds Estate). On February 23rd Rev. F. Leadley conducted a memorial service at the Green.
