Davison, Martin (1843-1916)

Mr. Martin Davison, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, passed away on December 24th, 1916, aged seventy-three years. For seventeen years he was associated with the Kingsley Terrace Church, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Previous to coming to Newcastle, he was associated with the Houghton-le-Spring Circuit, where he rendered very valuable service as class-leader, choir master, and Sunday school superintendent. For over fifty years he was a loyal and faithful member of our Church, serving various interests with ability and devotion. 

Eighteen months ago Mr. and Mrs. Davison celebrated their golden wedding. One son is in America, another has been in France over twelve months, and the others are rendering excellent service to our churches in Newcastle. There was a large attendance at the funeral service.

Family

Martin was born in late 1843 at Great Lumley, Co. Durham, to parents William Davison, a collier (1851), and Ann Howe. He was baptised on 21 October 1843 at Chester le Street, Co. Durham.

He married Mary Ramshaw (1845-1921) on 9 July 1865 at Chester le Street, Co. Durham. Census returns identify seven of twelve children.

  • Hannah (1869-1939)
  • Joseph Ramshaw (1871-1932) – coal miner (1891); emigrated to USA in 1908
  • John (b1873) – a draper’s assistant (1911)
  • Ann (b1875) – sales girl music shop (1891); dressmaker (1901)
  • Andrew (b1878) – engine fitter (1901)
  • Robert (b1885) – commercial clerk (1911)

Martin died on 24 December 1916 at Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.
