Dennis, William (1838-1916)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by John Hall

The Sutton Church, Hull III. Circuit, has lost a most respected member and official in the person of Mr. William Dennis. He was converted forty-four years ago under the ministry of Rev. P. Milsom. All who knew him knew that he was a Christian indeed. He was for over forty years a most useful local preacher, and as a preacher he made the Bible a study. He was never without a fresh message from its pages. He was a successful class leader, trustee, a society steward for years, and a worker in the Sunday school as long as he was able to attend to that form of work. His sympathy was early enlisted on the side of temperance. He signed the pledge himself and worked assiduously to win others. He early gave his sympathy to the cause of missions.

After a short and painful illness he passed away to his eternal reward. He leaves a widow to mourn his loss. His remains were laid to rest in the Sutton burial ground. The service was conducted by Rev. F.S. Bullough; Rev. John Hall gave an address; Rev. R. Harrison also took part. He was seventy-seven years of age when he passed to rest on March 30th, 1916, and had been connected with the Sutton Church all his religious life. We greatly value men of his type. They are the real pillars of our Churches.
