Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

“Forever with the Lord,” were the last words spoken by Mrs. John Lewendon, as she passed from her earthly home at Little Hungerford (Newbury Circuit) on the 23rd July, 1918, her sixty-fifth birthday, to rejoin her husband in the Homeland. She had previously sung “Jesus, Lover of my soul,” and during her fortnight’s illness frequently repeated verses of hymns with which her memory had been stored. Of pious parentage, she was early led to the village chapels and subsequently became a Sunday-school teacher and member of society. In her twenty-seventh year she was married to the son of Mr. William Lewendon, local preacher. Together they spent seventeen-and-half years in happy fellowship and Christian service, their home being the scene of cottage prayer meetings and choir practices, both husband and wife taking a leading part in the psalmody of God’s house. Left with four daughters, the youngest only sixteen months old, she bravely fought against the loneliness and sorrow which had come into her life, and had the joy of seeing them, as they grew up, taking a part in Christian service.

Her remains were laid to rest in Hermitage Churchyard, the Superintendent Minister (the Rev. Percy Jackson) officiating, and on the, following Sunday evening an affecting memorial service was conducted in Little Hungerford Chapel by Mr. Albert Adams, a life-long friend of the deceased.
