Longman, William (1834-1915)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J.G.

William Longman was born in Hull in 1834, and died there October 21st, 1915. Converted in young manhood, he joined our people. He married Miss Martha Medd, a devoted worker, and for over fifty years they served in Sunday school and church. Especially were they devoted to the cause at Lincoln Street, Mrs. Longman being a Sunday school teacher, and he a trustee, and for some years treasurer of the trust. In later years he became also a trustee for Clowes and Lambert Street chapels. To all these churches they gave liberally.

Bro. Longman’s best work was done in the pulpit. Possessing speaking power, he became a local preacher and won considerable popularity. He was an earnest advocate of the cause of temperance. He took practical interest in the Port of Hull Society’s Orphan Homes.

He held a position of much responsibility in Earle’s ship-building yard, and won alike the respect of the men and the confidence of the managers and directors. His chief joy was in his home and his Church. He loved his children, and kept open house for the ministers.

After the funeral service he was interred in Spring Bank Cemetery.
