Lucas, Abraham (1827-1901)
Transcription of Obituary in the Christian Messenger
Mr. A. Lucus was born at Alderbury, near Salisbury, October, 1827, and on March 21st, 1901, he entered into rest. He was the son of Wesleyan parents, and thus reaped the advantage of a pious home.
Fifty years ago he came by faith into saving touch with the Lord Jesus Christ and rejoiced in newness of life.
Many years ago he removed to Northam in the Southampton I. Circuit. He became a Trustee of the present chapel in Union Road, where for many years he served as steward, and for twenty years acted as caretaker without fee.
The class meeting was his delight. He prayed and lived for the prosperity of Zion. The influence of his life was great. The neighbours respected his honesty, genial temper, transparency of life and sympathetic spirit. He visited the sick, eagerly longing for the saving of the people. His memory is fragrant.
For many years he suffered, being unable for eight years to work at his trade; yet, as strength allowed, he toiled for God. Patiently and cheerfully he bore his affliction, and praised God for His goodness.
Death had no terrors for him. His expressions of trust and hope were fervent and many. To him the future was radiant; he eagerly waited the dawning of the day. On the morning of the day of his death he said to his wife, “Mother, follow me, I am going to Jesus, follow me.” Many friends followed his remains. There has passed from us a friend, a counsellor, an example. May we meet him again beyond the shadow of death, where joy and service never cease.
