Hanson was born on 8 November 1844 at Bradford, Yorkshire, to parents Jonas Gill, a woolcoomber, and Lydia Tommis. he was baptised on 24 June 1853 at St peter, Bradford.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Hanson.

• 1871 life assurance agent
• 1881 tailor

He married Emmaline Annie Woodhead 91845-1920) in the summer of 1872 at Bradford, Yorkshire. Census returns identify two children.

• Edith (1873-1960) – a dressmaker (1901)
• Helen (1874-1855) – a teacher (1901)

By 1881, Hanson is living with Maria Abraham (1848-1923) in Cleator, Cumberland. Census returns identify one child.

• Henry (b1880)

On 18 August 1894 Hanson emigrated to USA from Liverpool without either ‘family’.

He died on 15 March 1896 in Chicago.
