Green, George Herbert (1883-1940)

GEORGE HERBERT GREEN: born at Witton Park, co. Durham, in 1883. The call to the ministry awakened in him a deep and eager response and he entered Hartley College in 1909. He soon made a reputation as a minister of unusual ability and devotion, and filled with marked success responsible offices in District administration. Serving for a number of years as Synod Secretary, appreciation of his brotherly qualities and confidence in his matured judgment was shown by the members of the Doncaster and Barnsley District in his appointment as Chairman. He warmly cherished the hope that the office would give him the opportunity of wider service.

His high hopes were not to be realized, for in that hour the deep shadow of physical strain came upon him. He was sustained in the deepening struggle by the companionship of the family circle. The call to the Homeland, which came on December 24, 1940, in the fifty-seventh year of his age, did not take him unawares; he was perfectly ready to answer it. He will be gratefully remembered for his refined and kindly human contacts and his passionate devotion to the work of the circuits in which he laboured for thirty-one years.

Family

George was born on 25 November 1883 at Woodside, Witton Park, Co. Durham, to parents Anthony, a grocer and provision merchant (1901), and Jane.

He married Louisa Mary Pallister (b1878) in the summer of 1913 in the Morpeth Registration District, Northumberland. Birth records identify one child.
