Ratcliffe, Jane (nee Brown (1810-1873)

A transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by her husband, Thomas, is attached. She was converted in 1827 through the agency of her brother William. Thomas writes of her in glowing terms as she displayed all the attributes expected of a Victorian Christian wife. he concludes; “She was of course human, and, as such, had her infirmities; nevertheless, those who knew her best were driven to the conclusion that she was daily trying to copy the example of a good wife as given by Solomon in the 31st chapter of the Book of Proverbs.”

Thomas also notes that Jane was an accomplished singer and often led the singing in week-day evening services.

Family

Jane was born on 8 April 1810 at Skirlaugh, Yorkshire, to parents Robert and Jane.

She married Thomas Ratcliffe (1809-1880), a PM minister, on 1 August 1851. They had one child.

Jane died on 3 April 1873 at Hull, Yorkshire.
