Family

William was born in 1829 at Barnard Castle, Co. Durham, to parents William Thompson, a cabinet maker, and Mary Harvey. He was baptised on 1 May 1829 at Barnard Castle.

Census returns identify the following occupations for William.

  • 1881 farmer 216 acres & limestone quarry manager
  • 1891 farmer in Canada
  • 1901 farmer
  • 1911 farmer

The family emigrated to Canada in 1884.

He married Elizabeth Dalkin (abt1829-1866) in the summer of 1855 at Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Census returns identify three children.

  • Mary (1856-1912) – married George Sanderson, a quarry timekeeper (1911), in 1879  
  • William Harvey (1861-1916) – a railway traffic foreman (1911)         
  • Rachel (1864-1955) – married Frank Ames             

He married Jane Parker (1849-1937) on 11 August 1866 at Stanhope, Co. Durham. Census returns identify ten children.

  • Edmund Harvey (1868-1957) – a carpenter (1891)
  • Fanny (1871-1961) – married Ernest Hunt, a farmer
  • Lizzie Annie (b1874) – married John E Peterson, a dentist
  • Jane Parker (1877-1967) – married Robert Dunn, a commercial traveller (1921)
  • Ethel (1880-1913)  – married Charles C Cooke                  
  • Robert William (1882-1958) – a farmer (1921)
  • John Wilfrid (b1886) – a lawyer (1921)
  • Dara (b abt1889) – only identified in 1891 Canada census return
  • Maud Emily (1892-1913)
  • Lawrence Harvey (b1895) – a farmer (1921)

William died on 25 April 1922 at Grenfell, Saskatchewan, Canada
