Tapp, Caleb (1841-1916)

Family

Caleb was born in the spring of 1841 at Bishops Nympton, South Molton, Devon, to parents William Tapp, a mason & seedsman (1861), and Sarah Rodd, a baker (1861).

Census returns identify the following occupations for Caleb.

  • 1861 pupil teacher
  • 1871 schoolmaster at Chudleigh, Devon
  • 1881 elementary schoolmaster at Thornton, Bradford
  • 1891 elementary teacher
  • 1901 elementary schoolmaster
  • 1911 retired schoolmaster

He married Frances Mary Stocks (1849-1916) in late 1867 in the Newton Abbott Registration District, Devon. Census returns identify six children.

  • William Caleb (1870-1940) – a hairdresser (1901)               
  • Frances Mary S (1872-1955) – a music teacher (1891); professional singer (1901); married Walter Spencer, a letterpress printer (1911), in 1901                 
  • Sarah Elizabeth (1877-1955) – elementary assistant teacher (1901); married Richard Henry Rendell in 1905 
  • Wilfred Burnett (1880-1976)  – assistant schoolmaster (1911); head teacher (1939)             
  • Alfred George (1882-1961) – an engineer pattern maker (1911)
  • Winifred (1892-1984) – dressmaker (1911); married Herbert Robinson in 1914

Caleb died in late 1916 at Thornton, Bradford, Yorkshire.
