Family
James was born abt1844 at Thrustleton, Devon, to parents Samuel, a quarry labourer (1851), and Lucretia..
Before entering the ministry James was a farmer’s carter (1861).
He married Mary Jane Trenwith (1843-1903) in the spring of 1872 in the Stoke Damerel Registration District, Devon. Census returns and Birth records identify six children.
- Amelia Lucretia (1873-1946) – married Richard Edwin Charley Luscombe in 1911
- Edith Florence (abt1875-1962) – a pupil teacher (1891); married George Caines, a quarry manager (1911), in 1898

- Maud Mary (1877-1878)
- Mary (1879-1966) – married Jim Vanstone, Chief Petty Officer, RN (1911), in 1903
- Lily Maud (1880-1972) – a school teacher (1901); married Francis Ward Spencer between 1906 and 1910 at Amoy, China
James died on 22 January 1880 at Cawsand, Cornwall. His probate record continues to refer to him as a dissenting minister. I have not been able to identify which denomination he transferred to after leaving the PM ministry.
