Murray, Daniel James (1851-1928)

Daniel was president of the New Zealand Wesleyan Conference in 1902. He had been Secretary of Conference in 1895, and 1897-1901.

Family

Daniel was born on 17 November 1851 at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.

The 1871 census return records Daniel as a milk carrier  in Hackney, London.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Holder (1854-1939) in 1883 in New Zealand. Records identify three children.

  • Charles Holder (1884-1885)
  • Irene Jane (1886-1963) – married Herbert Dugdale Prichard in 1912
  • Clarence Rainton (1892-1953) – a civil servant (1946)

Daniel died on 27 September 1928 at St Andrews Chyd, Howick, Auckland, New Zealand.

  • Daniel Murray was the twin brother of my great-grandmother Jane Murray. They were born in circumstances of acute poverty in Cambridge and their mother died when they were 4 or 5 years old. Jane also moved to London as she was adopted by her mother’s cousin in Stoke Newington.
