Thomas was born on 26 December at Cockfield, Co. Durham, to parents Edward, an coal miner (1891) and assurance agent (1901), and Jane. He was baptised on 5 May 1886 at St Helen, Auckland, Co. Durham.

Thomas emigrated to USA, arriving at Philadelphia on 23 March 1912. There he worked initially as a collection agent (passport application) and later as a credit manager for an electric company (1930).
The 1930 USA census return records Thomas married to Ethel Jane Harrison (1895-1982) with three children. They married in early 1923 in the Auckland Registration District, Co. Durham. Census returns identify three children.

Thomas died in 1956 and was buried at Seaville Methodist Cemetery, Cape May County, New Jersey, USA.
