Mettam, Hannah (nee Davies) (1853-1913)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by B.A.

“A mother in Israel” was the late Mrs. Hannah Mettam, of Old Whittington, Chesterfield Third Circuit, who passed away on Nov. 21st, 1913. Born near Dudley, August 3rd, 1853, she came to Whittington about forty-five years ago, and joined our Church in 1878. The transparent beauty of her character, the clear ring of reality in her life, and the ever-ready acts of kindness to all in need, made her “an epistle of Christ” read and known throughout the locality.

To our village church she was a veritable tower of strength. The presence of Hannah Mettam could be counted upon at the services. Her work was many-sided, the spiritual and material interests of the society being alike her concern. Both chapel and school were spheres of her activity. Into her varied activities she carried the hope and cheer of Christian optimism. “The joy of the Lord was her strength.” Her children have grown up to call her blessed, the son being a most capable official and the daughter a very devoted worker of our Church.

The interment services on November 25th were conducted by Rev. B. Arnfield and Messrs. W.H. Fern and J. Jephson. In their great bereavement husband and children were helped by the many marks of sympathy and respect received.
