Mayer, Elizabeth (nee Champ) (1821-1907)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by John E. Leuty

The Higherland Church, in the Newcastle-under-Lyme circuit, suffered a distinct loss in the death of Mrs. Robert Mayer on September 7th, 1907. The deceased lady had reached a great age, being over eighty-six, and for years had not been able to attend any public services, but in her enforced absence she retained an unabated interest in everything affecting the welfare of Zion, and contributed to the various funds. After uniting with us in church fellowship she remained a consistent member for seventy years.

Her married life was singularly happy. She was always delighted to entertain the ministers of the Church, and such men as Hugh Bourne, William Clowes, Philip Pugh, and Thomas Bateman have enjoyed the generous hospitality of her home. Two of her daughters married into our ministry, one to the late David S. Prosser, and another to the Rev. W.B. Bache. All who remain are still true to the Church of their youth,

In earlier years the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mayer was a model Christian household, which neither honours nor wealth spoiled. The esteem in which our late sister was held, found fitting expression at her funeral, September 11th, when some of the most influential men of the Church and town attended. A large congregation assembled in the Higherland Church, where the writer conducted a most impressive service. The Rev. Joseph Shenton, an old friend of the family, gave a touching address, referring to her bright example, her generosity in providing dinners and teas for Quarter Day, and her patience in suffering.

The interment took place in the family vault situated in the Newcastle cemetery, the Revs. J. Shenton and J.E. Leuty officiating. May the name, which is as “ointment poured forth” in the Tunstall District, remain an honour in our midst, and the mourners find continual joy in its remembrance.
