Phipps, John (abt1812-1891)

Research notes

The 1841 census return records John, aged 29, at Clifton, Gloucestershire, with Rev. John Coxhead.

The 1851 census return records a John Phipps, bookseller, born at Beckton/Bacton, Herefordshire, married to Laura Hosking (abt1819-1868) from Redruth, Cornwall. They have two children, Thomas John (1847-1886) and Samuel Henry Hosking (b abt1850), both born at Redruth. John married Laura in late 1846 at Redruth, Cornwall.

In 1861 John and Laura are at Keynsham, Somerset, where John is an account keeper. They have one son, William James, (1852-1903) living with them.

In 1871 John is widowed and a labourer living with son Thomas at Axbridge, Somerset.

In 1881 John is a farmer of 23 acres at Orcop, Herefordshire married to Mary (1807-1882). He married Mary Gwatkins in the spring of 1876 in the Hereford Registration District.

In 1891 John is ‘living on his own means’ with son William, now a boot and leather dealer, in Reading. He died in the summer of 1891 at Reading. The dates of his first marriage and births of his first two children are consistent with his stationing at Redruth.

A John Phibbs was baptised on 19 April 1810 at Bacton, Herefordshire – is this John with a mis-transcribed online record?.
