Pickard, John Reynard (1827-1899)

Family

John was born on 27 August 1827 at Leeds, Yorkshire, to parents William, a shoemaker (1841), and Mary. He was baptised on 14 October 1827 at Quarry Hill or York Street PM Chapel, Leeds. (The baptism register covers both chapels.) He appears to have been baptised a second time on 16 May 1837 at St Peter, Leeds along with younger siblings.

Census returns identify the following occupations for John.

  • 1861 working engineer
  • 1871 engineer in worsted mill
  • 1881 general labourer

He married Jane Lyon (1830-1886) in the spring of 1855 at Preston, Lancashire. Census returns and birth records identify five children.

  • Elizabeth Lyon (1857-1929) – married George Frederick Duckett, a mineral water traveller (1891), in 1883
  • Thomas Lyon (1861-1861)
  • Mary Jane (1863-1930) – married Christopher Grainger, a domestic gardener (1901), in 1888
  • Mary Ann (b1866)
  • William (1870-1870)

He married Alice Wareing, nee Chamberlain (1840-1902) in the summer of 1890 in the Bramley Registration District, Yorkshire. Census returns identify three children, all born before John and Alice married. John appears to have separated from Jane circa 1871/2.

  • John William (abt1873-1929) – a baker (1901); emigrated to Canada
  • Samuel Smith (1877-1951 – emigrated to Canada and then USA; a butcher (1920)
  • Betsy Ellen (b1885) – a dressmaker (1901); married James Preston, a market gardener (1911), in 1907; emigrated to Canada in 1913

John died on 10 September 1899 at Harrogate, Yorkshire.
