Champion, Jonas (1816-1898)

Family

Jonas was baptised on 3 November 1816 at Chalgrave, Oxfordshire. He was born in Berrick Salome, Oxfordshire, to parents John and Barbara.

After leaving the ministry, Jonas was a bookseller in Brighton, Sussex, where his children were born. The time of his leaving the ministry coincides with the birth of his first child. The 1861 and later census returns describe him as town missionary at Bridgewater.

He married Mary Scribbans (abt1816-1894) in the summer of 1844 at Reading, Berkshire. Census returns identify six children.

  • Emma (b abt1848) – a school teacher (1871);
  • John (1849-1851)
  • Ann (b1849) – a school teacher (1871); married Thomas Floyd Hooper, a commercial clerk (1881), in 1875
  • Jabez (b abt1853) – a harness maker (1871)
  • Fanny (b1854)
  • Frederick (1856-1913) – a chemists assistant (1881); a chemist (1901); a tobacconist, newsagent & confectioner (1911)

Jonas died on 16 February 1898 at Bridgewater, Somerset.
