Potter, Thomas (1886-1914)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J.C.M.

On March 8th, 1914, Thomas Potter passed away. He had lived only twenty-seven years, but as Sunday School secretary and local preacher he had done good work for Jesus Christ and endeared himself to a large circle of friends. As a local preacher he gave promise of much usefulness. His intellectual grasp and his power to impart knowledge, together with an alertness in relation to modern needs, marked him for a ministry that would have enriched the Church and blessed humanity. Great sympathy goes out to his young widow. The funeral was conducted by Rev. W. Howard, who also preached memorial sermon at Westleton.

Family

Thomas was born in the spring of 1886 at Westleton, Suffolk, to parents John Potter, a shoemaker (1891) and Ann Louisa Goodchild.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Thomas.

  • 1901 cow boy on farm
  • 1911 assurance agent

He married Lilian Maud  Scarlett(1881-1972) in early 1910 in the Blitzing Registration District, Suffolk. Census returns identify three children.

  • Marjorie (1910-1912)
  • Muriel (1911-1994) – married Mervyn Wright, a bank clerk (1939), in 1935
  • Gladys (1913-1982) – typing & book-keeping clerk (1939)

Thomas died on 8 March 1914 at Westleton, Suffolk.
