Pattinson, Sarah Eleanor (Ella) (1884-1909)
Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine
For Mr. Wm. Pattinson, of Castleside Society, Shotley Bridge Circuit, the year 1909 left a black record of bereavement. Two daughters were taken from the home in the morning beauty and grace of womanhood. Ella, a fine Christian girl, was known and loved by all for her gentle wisdom and kind strength of character.
Her conversation was a model of true refinement: no coarseness of speech or sentiment could thrive in her presence, and the good name of the absent, friend or foe, was always safe in her keeping. She was to have been married in the summer of 1909, but in the previous autumn her health, never robust, gave way, and the fatal disease proceeded until May 24th, 1909, when, after 25 years of pilgrimage, she reached home.
It was the writer’s privilege to see much of her during the last months, and her solicitude for the comfort of those around her, her cheerfulness in pain, and her real joy in God, are characteristics which memory treasures.
A large concourse of old and young crowded the village chapel, and followed the remains to the churchyard, the circuit ministers, Revs. E.B. Storr and J. Rutherford, officiating.
Family
Ella was born in the spring of 1884 at Castleside, Co. Durham, to parents William Pattinson, a mill furnace man and local preacher (1901), and and Jane Ann Brown. She was baptised on 15 April 1884 at Shotley Bridge.
Ella died on 24 May 1909 at Castleside, Co. Durham.
