Clayton, Mary Ann (nee Dalton) (abt1841-1915)
Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J. Keightley
By the death of Mrs. H. Clayton on October 1st, 1915, the church at John Street, Sheffield, lost a member of forty-eight years’ standing. Her good works were manifold. Most regular at public worship, if compelled to be absent her offerings were forwarded. President of the women’s meeting for seven years, she was held in high esteem by the members. Active and generous in church work, her husband, as circuit steward, had her constant support.
She was a model home builder. Her three sons call her blessed. Her illness was very short; her end was triumph and peace. The funeral took place in the General Cemetery on October 5th, and was conducted by Revs. J. Keightley and A. Jubb. The memorial service was conducted by Rev. A. Jubb on October 17th.
Family
Mary was born abt1841 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, to parents John, a file cutter (1851), and Mary.
She married Henry Clayton (1841-1921), a woodcutter (1861) and later timber yard manager (1881), in the summer of 1860 at Sheffield, Yorkshire. Census returns identify three of five children.
- Albert (b abt1861-1920) – a wood sawyer
- Charles William (1867-1938 – a hardware cutters and merchant
- Joseph Henry (1873-1945) – a hardware cutters and merchant
Mary died on 1 October 1915 at Sheffield, Yorkshire.
