Stout, William (1856-1913)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J.G.B.

On Monday, March 17th, 1913, we laid our friend to rest in the churchyard of his native village, Frosterley. For two years he had been in failing health and the end was peaceful. Born in the dale fifty-seven years ago, his parents were loyal members of our Church. He was converted in a great revival conducted by the late Mr. John Bainbridge. Though our friend was quiet and reserved, there were deep fires of love and zeal in his heart and his experience of divine things was real and bright.

For the last five-and twenty years he has lived in Stockton and was widely-known and highly esteemed by all classes. He rejoiced in his membership at the Paradise Row church, and in his latest years served as the senior society steward. He was indeed a faithful steward, careful in all things and proud of the fine record of the Church. Last year he was chosen as delegate to the District Meeting, and the Synod elected him to the Conference at Norwich.

Several Stockton friends accompanied the family to Frosterley for the interment, and at the station there was a large assemblage of relatives and friends from all parts of the dale. Many friends attended the funeral, which was conducted by Revs. J. Ramsay and J.G. Bowran. He was indeed a good man, full of quiet devotions and gentle deeds. We doubt not that his widow will be comforted in the love of our God.
