Joseph was born in 1846 at Fishlake, Yorkshire, to parents Joseph Hodson, a farmer, and Harriet Newborn. He was baptised on 31 May 1846 at Fishlake.

Joseph died on 19 July 1911 at Fishlake, Yorkshire.
